The Sock Bun

Perusing Madame Squirrel the other day I read a little blurb about the sock bun.

The bane of my existence is my thin brittle hair. I try all the time to do a big messy top bun   but it always just ends up being a really awkward nub (round head, nub/tip on top--you can see why that's awkward). 
I was completely sucked in by the promise of thick hair and thus fame and fortune and, after following some links, came across this video:
